I wanted to give fair warning to those who belong to or who are considering joining the health club Court South in the Knoxville, TN area (which is owned by National Fitness). Among the things you have to look forward to is having to remember, after 2 or 3 years, exactly when your contract expires and then send a certified letter 30 days before that date to cancel; If you don't, then your contract will automatically be extended at a monthly rate. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) gave Court South an "F" rating. As always, judge for yourself, but I would seriously consider joining another health club.

I was a member of National Fitness in Sevierville, TN and finished my three year term. Last month in February, I emailed the main branch in Knoxville to receive information to cancel my membership. I received an email giving my the address, and that was all. Nothing else stating the cancellation letter had to be certified. It's a month later and they have charged my debit card yet again and mysteriously do not show any correspondence by email or mail. They have not received my letter and show that I'm still active. The representative I spoke with on the phone was rude and would not let me speak with a manager. She stated that from the time they receive the certified letter, it will be thirty days until my membership is cancelled and my card will be charged again. This is outrageous and unprofessional. No one is willing to correct this problem. I have not used their facility in several months. I do NOT recommend this gym to anyone because of the terrible cancellation process and the lack of intergrity of their representatives to provide quality customer service.

The gym was large and had great equipment, but once you actually get past the excitement I have seen MANY locals unknowingly sign a contract that is near impossible to get out of even if you have to move. 3 years is a risky investment and expensive since the company knowingly charges a higher rate in Sevierville compared to its gyms in other area because of the lack of competition in the area. Check out the Sevierville or Pigeon Forge Community Center since their yearly rates are as much as a one month rate at NFC.
